Between 1951 and 1953, a young Anglo Jewish scientist named Rosalind Franklin worked in X-ray diffraction at King’s College London, tasked with using X-ray photography to discover the structure of DNA. She took a photograph—known as Photograph 51—that revealed the double helix structure of DNA. Double Helix is Franklin’s story, which has been left out of our dominant cultural narrative about the most important scientific discovery in modern history. Double Helix follows the young researcher as she navigates antisemitism, love and adversity. The musical, directed by Scott Schwartz, runs from May 30 to June 18 at Bay Street Theater. baystreet.org
