In the pursuit of peak performance, sleep consistently emerges as a primary cornerstone for whole-body health. Beyond mere rest, it’s the body’s time to rejuvenate and restore cognitive function, emotional balance and physical vitality on a deeper level. The quality of our sleep is deeply intertwined with our surrounding environment—and the bedroom is where we spend most of our time, with the average human spending nearly 26 years or one-third of their life asleep. Poor-quality indoor air—which often contains sneaky pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), allergens, mold and other chemicals—can contribute to sleep disturbances and trigger negative respiratory symptoms. To best optimize your sleep, bring the healing power of nature indoors by incorporating air-purifying houseplants such as snake plants, peace lilies and ferns to help mitigate airborne toxins throughout the home.

Promote deeply restorative rest while limiting your exposure to unnecessary chemicals by opting for organic sheets and pillowcases made from sustainable, natural materials including flax linen, cotton and bamboo. Synthetic fibers such as polyester, which is made from oil, are less breathable and comfortable, and they’re also harsher on the planet.

Nearby, in the bathroom, experts recommend reaching for an eco-friendly, plant-based cleaner (or concoct your own with ½ cup white vinegar, ½ cup water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil). Consider swapping out conventional cleaning products, which, when used regularly, can disrupt the endocrine system and throw off hormonal balance. VOCs and other chemicals present in many household cleaning supplies and air fresheners can trigger chronic respiratory issues, allergic reactions and headaches. To maintain the purest bed and bath and improve indoor air quality, aerate and declutter your space often, rearrange furniture and consider making these eight swaps for a cleaner home:

Linen—a natural insulator due to its hollow, breathable fibers—effortlessly moves air and moisture, making it a naturally thermoregulating material, perfect for hot sleepers. Although classic memory foam mattress toppers are generally considered safe, they may pose a risk to certain people, including those suffering from asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions.
