Few artists have reshaped popular music the way Lauryn Hill has. As a founding member of the Fugees, she was the gravitational center of one of the defining acts of the ’90s; their 1996 album The Score remains among the bestselling hip-hop records ever made. She followed it with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, fusing neo-soul, reggae, hip-hop and R&B into a single, coherent vision. Winning five Grammys including Album of the Year, Hill was the first woman to take that prize as a solo artist in the hip-hop era.
