Stay Home And Stay Glam

Valery Joseph of Valery Joseph Salon and Alicia Cook of Southampton’s Revolve Hair offer DIY solutions for looking good while flattening the curve.

As we forgo regular salon treatments, our hair may become harder and harder to manage. While we long for the day we’re back in the chair, stylist Valery Joseph shares foolproof tips for staying stylish at home.

    1. Soften up! Joseph says extended time at home is a great opportunity to nourish and condition your hair using high quality masks and oils. He recommends the Heal Mask, which is perfect for fine, over-processed blonde locks, and the Nourish Mask for medium to thick dry hair.

    2. Tame your mane. To manage frizz, apply a high-quality serum or oil (such as the Brilliance Oil) to wet hair, then brush through with a wide-toothed comb. Part down the middle, and plait into two loose braids on either side. These twists will keep your roots smooth as they dry, and create a gentle wave toward your ends.

    3. Rock an updo. Ponytails and slicked back buns are low-maintenance styles that always look chic. Before sweeping your hair up, apply the Smooth sculpting cream to fight flyaways and create shine. Finish with a spritz of the Extended spray to keep your style in place all day.

    4. Try this blowdry trick: Want that “fresh out of the salon” blowout look at home? Blow dry the top layer of hair closest to the temples and crown of the head thoroughly with a round brush. This will hide any frizz or stubborn waves under a smooth outer layer, creating a more polished look. Joseph recommends applying the Cure serum to set the look and seal split ends.

    5. Put the clippers down. It may be safer for men to forgo cutting their own hair during lockdown, and stick to neck and sideburn touch ups only. Joseph’s advice for women: “If you already have a good haircut, the shape is already there. If you are in desperate need of a trim, use a small scissor and chop only the brittle split ends of your hair at the very bottom. Be sure to cut both sides evenly. Symmetry is crucial.”

    6. Most importantly, don’t panic. “Fear makes us do crazy things!” says Joseph. “Don’t attempt any drastic changes during quarantine. This will only make it harder for your stylist to bring back your normal look when the salon opens up again.”
