The Hetrick-Martin Institute celebrated a historic fundraising achievement at its annual “School’s Out” benefit, totaling $760,000—over $100,000 more than last year. This milestone event marks the highest amount ever collected in the 24-year history of the summer fundraiser, coinciding with HMI’s 45-year legacy of supporting LGBTQIA+ youth.
Hosted by Marcus Brown, EVP of Entergy Corporation, and his family at their home in Water Mill, New York, the event attracted notable figures such as Tamron Hall, Darren Star, Candace Bushnell and more. Co-chairs Ben Dixon, Tonia Steck and Laurence Milstein, along with the Brown family and HMI’s board of directors, orchestrated an evening filled with entertainment, gourmet dining and heartfelt speeches.
The festivities began with a cocktail reception featuring a specialty drink from Hall’s upcoming cookbook. Hall, who also hosted the event, expressed her enthusiasm for supporting HMI’s mission. Guests enjoyed music from renowned DJ Lina Bradford, synchronized swimming performances, and various culinary delights, including contributions from Duryea’s, STK Steakhouse, and Chloe’s.
HMI CEO Amy Harclerode emphasized the significance of the funds raised, stating their critical role in providing resources and services to LGBTQIA+ youth: “In a climate of uncertainty about the future rights and freedoms of LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly youth of color,” she said, “it is reassuring to know that there are many people who support our community and HMI’s mission.”
Board Co-Chair Ben Dixon expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support and excitement for next year’s 25th anniversary of “School’s Out.” The event’s success ensures that HMI can continue its vital work, offering free, accessible mental health services and fostering healthy youth development.
