We’re living in a state of constant overstimulation: endless doomscrolling, nonstop notifications, chronic stress and information overload. In today’s world, a dysregulated nervous system has become less the exception and more the norm. As modern wellness plays catch-up and the focus shifts toward recovery and restoration, tools that harness the power of frequency and vibration are gaining more and more traction as a legitimate way to reset.

From PEMF mats to sound therapy tables and vibroacoustic loungers, these technologies are popping up in longevity clinics, recovery lounges and now doctors’ offices. Usually powered by pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), these mats and chair-lounger systems blend ancient energetic principles with modern technology to support relaxation, recovery and nervous system regulation. Many products also incorporate infrared heat, crystals and subtle vibrational stimulation designed to promote circulation, ease tension and encourage a deeper sense of calm.

The concept behind PEMF is rooted in basic physics: Everything in the universe operates at its own natural frequency—you, me, the wooden desk in the room. And with no shortage of external stimulation, it doesn’t take much to throw us off-kilter. “It’s a treatment that uses low-frequency electromagnetic waves to stimulate cells in the body,” says Alexander Greaux, D.C., a practicing chiropractor who incorporates the technology at his Aventura Wellness & Rehabilitation Center in Miami. “Your body has 30 to 40 trillion cells, and each one of them has a charge. Like a cell phone loses charge after a lot of use, the cells in the body also lose charge. For your phone, you’d plug it in to restore its charge; with your body, you would use PEMF to charge your cells.”

Vibrational mats deliver specific frequencies that can induce different states of relaxation. For anyone seeking the grounding benefits of the earth (often referred to as “earthing”) from the comfort of their own home, vibrational healing mats offer a simple solution. Layers of crushed crystals (usually around 20 pounds) are believed to provide an added boost to the warming infrared technology while naturally producing negative ions, allowing users to reap the same benefits as a barefoot walk in nature.

While research around vibrational therapies continues to evolve, PEMF has been studied most extensively in the context of recovery and healing. “The most researched and widely accepted use is in bone healing, like in the case of fractures where healing time is accelerated by as much as 50%,” says Greaux. “Other use cases include decrease in pain, osteoarthritis support, soft tissue healing, better sleep, faster recovery from workouts and overall wellness.”

Greaux notes that not all PEMF devices are created equal, and it’s important to take strength into account. “Less than 1 gauss is considered low and is the usual consumer market,” he shares. “This would be more appropriate for recovery, sleep and relaxation. Moderate would be 1 to 50 gauss and is good for circulation. High would be 50-plus gauss and would be considered medical grade.”

One current at-home fan favorite is HigherDose’s Infrared PEMF Mat, which combines PEMF, crystal and infrared heat technology. Depending on the desired effect, users can choose from several frequency settings designed to align with different brain-wave states.

In need of a post-lunch energy boost? Try the beta, or 23 Hz brain-wave setting, which promotes alertness and clarity, while the 10 Hz (alpha brain-wave) setting encourages calm, focus and stress relief. Feeling anxious or scattered? Simply plug in your PEMF mat to recharge while working from home, wind down before bed or elevate your at-home meditation sessions.
