PURIST: The American Cancer Society projects that 1 in 3 people in the United States will get cancer in their lifetime, up from 1 in 10 in 1970. Given what you’ve learned from your father, the late biologist Dr. Mirko Beljanski, what are the environmental dangers we currently face that increase the risk of cancer?
Sylvie Beljanski: We are exposed daily to a growing toxic burden: pesticides, endocrine disrupters, plastics, air pollution, heavy metals, ultra-processed foods, chronic inflammation and chronic stress. Many of these compounds did not exist—or existed at far lower levels—a few generations ago. What concerns me most is not only the quantity of toxins, but the cumulative effect of lifelong exposure. We now live in an environment where the body is constantly under assault, while simultaneously becoming more depleted nutritionally, emotionally and energetically. My father, Dr. Mirko Beljanski, believed that protecting health begins with reducing toxic exposure while strengthening the body’s natural capacity for resilience, repair and balance. That philosophy is at the heart of everything we do today, through The Beljanski Foundation and Maison Beljanski.
Based on Dr. Beljanski’s research, which you’re continuing after his death, at what stage during the cancer journey is it best to consider alternative remedies?
The Beljanski approach has always been integrative, not oppositional. The goal is not to reject conventional medicine, but to support the body intelligently and holistically. Many patients explore natural approaches after exhausting conventional options, but ideally, integrative support should begin much earlier.
This summer, The Beljanski Foundation hosts Hamptons Sweat Fest, a fitness and wellness fundraiser in the Hamptons. How will this event further the mission of The Beljanski Foundation?
The Hamptons Sweat Fest & Fundraiser brings together movement, recovery, education, connection and purpose. It is dedicated to supporting ongoing cancer stem cell research funded by The Beljanski Foundation. Cancer stem cells are now believed to play a major role in recurrence, metastasis and treatment resistance, making them one of the most important frontiers in modern oncology research. Every ticket purchased helps advance this mission. We want people to leave inspired—to take better care of themselves, and to actively support the future of cancer research and prevention.
In your impactful book, Winning the War on Cancer: The Epic Journey Towards a Natural Cure, you talk about how your father was strongly opposed in his home country, France. Has getting the word out about holistic cancer treatments gotten easier?
When my father first spoke about environmental toxins, DNA destabilization and selective natural compounds, many of these ideas were dismissed outright. Today, conversations about toxicity, microbiome health, integrative oncology and prevention have become far more mainstream. It is important to approach these conversations responsibly. The Beljanski Foundation funds university-based research rather than anecdotal claims.
Tell us about the offerings at Maison Beljanski, your store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
We focus on clean, science-inspired wellness solutions designed to support vitality, resilience, detoxification, immune balance and healthy aging. Our offerings include carefully formulated botanical supplements, teas, skin care, and educational resources. What are your current favorite wellness practices?
I try to minimize toxic exposure as much as possible, prioritize clean nutrition, stay physically active, protect my sleep, spend time outdoors and maintain emotional balance despite a very demanding schedule. I also believe strongly in preventive support rather than waiting for a health crisis to occur. Movement is also essential—not only physically, but mentally. Wellness is not only about longevity; it is about energy, clarity, resilience and joy.
